It's Simpler than You Think
You've heard me talk about the advantages of acquiring an Inner Guide. And about the importance of doing self-hypnosis regularly to enable your Inner Guide to work on your behalf to end your discomforts and solve problems. You've heard me say that it is easy to learn how to do self-hypnosis. And that it is identical to certain forms of meditation. But what, actually, is it?
A State of Dissociation
When you are in a situation in which you are insufficiently stimulated by your environment, you enter a state in which your mind creates a double pathway and, often, you are aware of only one of those two pathways.
You Have Already Been in a Self-hypnotic State
Have you ever left work thinking about something, and been surprised when you arrived at home? You were in a self-hypnotic state. Because the routine of going home had become so familiar, it didn't provide sufficient stimuli for you to keep thinking about it. Some other subject then took over your attention. Perhaps you were thinking about a problem at work, or a triumph at work, either of which would provide more mental stimulation than the same old routine of going home. Yet you were still getting home. You mind had created a double pathway: the thought you were preoccupied with, and going home.
What Does Meditation Provide?
I've said that certain forms of meditation are identical to self-hypnosis. With these forms of meditation, you minimize stimuli by sitting in a quiet place and performing a repetitive act, such as thinking about your breathing or saying the same word over and over. This act provides the same monotony as the routine of going home from work, and because you are thinking about peacefulness (or whatever you are seeking), your mind creates a double pathway: your thinking about your breathing (or your repetition of your word), and your thoughts of peacefulness. Feelings of peacefulness may then take over because they are more powerful than the repetition of your breathing, or a word.
What Can Self-hypnosis Provide?
Similarly, with self-hypnosis, you simply focus on one thing (with my technique, you focus on a spot on the wall) and the mental pathway of whatever you are wishing for will be created and experienced. If you wish to feel peaceful and calm, you will. Or, if you wish to end an unwanted habit, a new mental pathway dedicated to that result will come into existence and work on it, out of your awareness, whenever you are in the self-hypnotic state.
