External Causes of Desperation
The news is full of stories about people who are desperate. Some of these people are in truly dire straits, such as the victims of the recent extreme weather events. But desperation can also result from life situations that are less drastic but still nearly unbearable, such as a work situation whose demands are excessive or a social situation that leaves one isolated and lonely.
Internal Causes of Desperation
Others feel desperate to achieve some goal that that they feel is essential to their emotional wellbeing. This drive comes from an inner need that they often aren't even aware of. They may overwork to compensate for feelings of inadequacy, or over-commit to helping others to ensure that they are nice. Some people feel desperate about a situation that isn't directly related to them but, rather, to a cause. They may have extreme feelings about one or another political or moral position. This is a displacement of an inner need.
