There is Much Ambiguity with COVID Information
As we continue to assess our safety, or lack thereof, in the light of increasing knowledge of COVID, we are presented with ever-changing information. Are fomites (such as groceries, doorknobs) a danger? First, yes; now, not really. Are droplets the main source of infection? First yes, now we learn that aerosols are dangerous and that they travel more than six feet. What about inside vs. outside?
The newest information that I have seen (in yesterday’s New York Times’s “The Morning” by David Leonhardt) describes failings in the interpretation of data regarding the danger of being outside. Out of an overabundance of caution, the C.D.C. has said that the chances of getting COVID while outside are unrealistically high (10%). Analysis of the data reveals that many locations and activities were classified as outside when they were, in fact, partially inside; and that the danger from being outside is miniscule.
What Comes Next?
What knowledge will be revised or replaced next? And what about the unknowns, such as new variants? When will they arrive and what will their behavior be? How should we make decisions about what to do and what not to do? The situation is very ambiguous.
Inability to Tolerate Ambiguity Can Leave One Unsafe
People who have trouble tolerating ambiguity will be very disequilibrated by it, and will try to escape it either by choosing to believe whatever evidence best lowers their disequilibration or by denying the entire situation. Either way, because they are not judging the situation rationally, they are not optimally protecting themselves.
