Medical Dilemmas
There are times when we may be confronted with moral dilemmas; and now, as we are in the midst of a pandemic, is one of those times. One of the most obvious and dramatic of these dilemmas confronts doctors who fear having to choose who will get a ventilator and who won't, when there aren't enough to go around. Another concerns paramedics, who were recently directed to refrain from performing CPR on patients whose hearts had stopped. CPR exposes paramedics to infectious droplets and an alarming number of them have become ill and unavailable to work. This directive is wrenching for them, as they have been trained and are motivated to do everything they can to save a life.
Economic Dilemmas
Another obvious dilemma is faced by governmental administrators (governors, mayors, etc.) who need to balance protecting the population versus protecting the economy. If they open the economy, even stepwise, more people will die. Yet if they continue the quarantine, people will also die, as they are unable to sustain themselves without paychecks. Government bureaucracy is overwhelmed by unemployment benefit applications and many people are therefore without any money for food. We see cars lined up for miles at food banks. Twenty percent of the country's children are underfed and hungry.
And What About Us?
This situation also confronts all of us with a moral dilemma: how much of our resources should we allocate to helping others versus taking care of our own needs, present and future. Some might choose to give less than they might, or even nothing, due to an irrational fear of losing more than they can afford. Others might give too much, having established a maladaptive habit pattern of being selfless.
And how should one divvy up one's contribution? How much to provide direct help to the needy? How much to fund entities that will do the best job of managing the overall situation? Fortunately, our Inner Guides will assist us in making the best decisions.
