Does it Seem Like Things are Unraveling?
As I read about nurses being attacked in Emergency Rooms and teachers being attacked in schools, I wonder how things have come to such a pass. It appears that some people (adults as well as students) have lost all sense of restraint, and feel free to express their anger physically. (It's actually the nurses and teachers who, working under impossible conditions, have good reason to be angry.)
I also read about brazen attacks on stores, with dozens of people entering high end stores, smashing the counters with hammers, and making off with expensive goods. (This has happened within a mile of where I live.) These people have also lost all sense of restraint.
What does it say about our society that these events are now occurring and that people feel free to behave this way?
How Are We to Deal with It?
People speculate about the reasons why these things may be occurring, but regardless of the causes, we need to deal with our own external and internal vulnerability to these situations.
External vulnerability:
- We need to keep informed, so that we are aware that these events are occurring.
- We need to avoid denial; to realize that we might find ourselves in a dangerous situation.
- We need to take appropriate precautions, as best we can.
- Those of you who work in exposed situations can push for improvements in your environment. (Some nurses and teachers are striking effectively.)
Internal vulnerability:
- We need a way to manage the distress we may have as we learn about these events.
- We need a way to master our response should we be a victim of one of these events.
