Misleading News
A couple of years ago I wrote about misinformation in the news, one example being the spreading of erroneous news about electoral candidates. False web pages were being created, not only the Russians, but also by both liberals and conservatives in our country. I suggested that the way to avoid being misinformed was to depend on reputable news sources rather than the newsfeeds on social media.
Confusing News
Now we are confronted with an even greater problem: confusing news provided by sources that we should be able to trust.
The latest advice from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) on testing for COVID is at odds with what reputable scientists advise. The CDC says that it is not necessary to test asymptomatic people, but the scientists say that it is very important to so in order to stem the epidemic.
Police departments are giving mixed messages to the public. On the one hand, leaders are saying that they are committed to serving the public with humanity and respect; but on the other hand, there are increasing indications that many police officers are not doing so.
The latest news from the United States Postal Service is that it can ably handle all the mail-in ballots that are expected. Meanwhile, people (including me) are experiencing delayed and lost mail, and postal service workers describe mail sorting machines that have been padlocked.
With this kind of confusion, we may feel as though society is descending into chaos.
