Clear Thinking Can Be Unknowingly Compromised
We strive and hope for clear thinking. But there are ways in which it can be compromised without our being aware of it. One area in which our thinking may be impaired is in our assessments of other people.
What Clouds Judgment?
An obvious example is that of prejudice. Our judgment of a person may be colored by an opinion or belief, often subliminal, about one of her characteristics: race, gender, attire, occupation, or political persuasion.
Another example is that of having a belief that is so strongly held that it overrides other information. Many people who are of one political persuasion are not open to ideas offered by the opposition that might be worth considering. Or, they may consider one character trait so essential that they reject a person who is lacking that trait.
One's own transferences also get in the way. We may view another person as though he were a figure from our past or even a figure who resembles us; impressions that are inaccurate.
