More So Than Other People Are?
Do loud or unexpected noises irritate or startle you? Are your feelings easily hurt? Do you agonize over minor mistakes or moments when you have inadvertently hurt others? You may be hypersensitive. People vary greatly in their sensitivity levels. Some are high-strung while others are mellow. Why does hypersensitivity occur in some people but not in others?
Genetic
For some hypersensitive people the origin is principally genetic. They are unusually sensitive to all stimuli from birth onward. As babies, they are excitable and restless, and are considered more difficult than other babies. This trait continues through development and on into adulthood. They don't understand that they are at the upper end of the excitability spectrum and that others don't feel things as strongly as they do. And others, who aren't hypersensitive, don't understand why these people are so hyper-reactive.
Trauma
Some develop hypersensitivity to specific stimuli following a traumatic experience. Their overreactions may be limited to a few stimuli that are associatively related to the trauma, such as the sight of a weapon by one who has been accosted, or the sound of fireworks by a veteran who experienced combat.
Generalization
Sometimes these stimuli generalize. The person who overreacts to the sight of a weapon may become more sensitive to associatively related stimuli such as kitchen knives and the dark. The veteran who initially reacts to debris along the road and loud noises may, if not treated, develop a startle reaction whenever family members speak or move about.
An Inner Guide Can Help
An Inner Guide (a special, unique mental pathway that it is possible for you to create in your mind) has the ability, first of all, to know whether you are hypersensitive, and if you are, it can help you understand your situation and how best to manage it. It can also help decrease your hyperreactivity by finding alternate responses to stimuli. And it can help you understand those around you who are hypersensitive and how you can help them.
