An Idea
I once heard a program host on a classical music station complain about how frustrating she found it when she would hear a piece of music replaying in her mind over and over and be unable to stop it. I used to have this experience myself, on occasion, but I have found a solution: to deliberately play a different piece of music in my mind.
What About Unwanted Thoughts That Are More Problematic
And I've found that this kind of substitution can be applied to other problematic thoughts. Do you ever remember and then dwell on things you've done that you feel guilty or embarrassed about? And been unable to escape that memory and painful feeling for awhile? A faux pas? A foolish purchase? A moment of thoughtlessness? Or a memory of something upsetting that was done to you? An unfair criticism? A put-down? A rejection or exclusion?
You Can Substitute a Better Thought
If so, then when you are stricken by a painful memory, you can substitute a thought about what a good person you are. You can think about your recent acts of kindness and thoughtfulness, and of all the people you've been good to and helped. My complimentary Tool will assist you in doing this. In Step 3, instead of the wish to be peaceful and calm; wish to remember, and enjoy thinking about, the acts of kindness you have done.
