Not as Simple as it Seems
Have you ever put something off? Perhaps you had to write a report, a resume, or a difficult email. Pay bills, do chores, or buy important items. Change a habit such as smoking, overeating, or doomscrolling. As you procrastinate, you feel a nagging sense of guilt.
Why are you procrastinating?
- Fear of the result –– Might an ill-worded email provoke an angry response?
- Perfectionism –– Do you feel that you must get something perfect before you can finish it?
- Overwhelm –– Do you have too much to do?
- Boredom ––Do you want to delay the feeling of boredom that would accompany certain tasks?
- Low confidence –– Do you doubt your ability to complete a task successfully?
Sometimes Procrastination is a Habit
In some cases, procrastination is a habit that was created in early childhood as a means of dealing with a discomfort. At an early age, a child's resources for handling discomforts are very limited; hence solutions for those discomforts are partial solutions: they don't deal definitively with the problem. But they become locked in as responses to problems. This is how habits are formed, and why it's so hard to break them.
- Are you a perfectionist? You need help to break that habit.
- Bored? You need help to provide yourself with adequate stimulation during routine tasks.
When Procrastination is Helpful
In other cases, procrastination serves a positive purpose; it creates a delay that is necessary for a positive solution to come into awareness.
- Is your email ill-worded? Delay in writing will allow time for a better wording to come to you.
- Do you feel overwhelmed? Delay may be good; it will allow you to regain clarity and energy.
When Confidence is Low
- Do you have low confidence? You need a special kind of help to solve this problem.
