Off the Beaten Track
I have begun reading a newsletter about the stock market written by a man who calls himself a speculator rather than an investor. And so, rather than studying the pros and cons of companies that are currently large and well-known, he seeks out companies that are now small but which he thinks will become very successful in the future because they will provide new and better ways of doing things.
Outliers
One example is a small company that creates 3D printing products. While this technique has frustrated certain people, such as those who have tried to make guns with 3D printers (that just didn’t work well for them), 3D printing (now using materials other than just plastic) is beginning to revolutionize the production of many things, from entire homes to body parts. (Body parts? 3D uses “bio-ink” made of human cells.)
Another example is a small company that is revolutionizing energy storage. Its founder has created a battery that will last so much longer than present ones that an electric vehicle will be able to travel for months without recharging. Power companies are beginning to use this technology to replace conventional power plants; our homes will be powered by batteries.
Where Courage is Necessary
The inventors of these new products are not only very creative, they are also courageous. Driven by their creativity, they have chosen to leave their previous safe occupational milieus in order to pursue their new ideas. And the speculator that seeks out these people and their small companies is, himself, courageous.
How many people have had inklings of revolutionary ideas but have lacked the courage to pursue them; have perhaps even lacked the courage to become fully aware of them? Of course, courage is not something that people can simply will themselves to have; it is dependent on freedom from a variety of emotional difficulties.
