A Problem with the Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us. It brings various problems, depending on one's situation, and one of those problems is that many of us have extra demands on our time. And for many of us our schedules are already full. How can one fit in all the extra things that need to be done?

 Non-optimal "Solutions"

One solution is to stay up later (or get up earlier) but that means losing sleep; an uncomfortable choice. An alternative is to do everything faster: perhaps driving faster, walking faster, rushing into and out of stores, cutting verbal interchanges short. This solution is also uncomfortable because it raises our tension level, causing us to feel stressed. And this is compounded by our awareness (whether liminal or subliminal) that we may be depriving ourselves of needed comforts, putting ourselves in danger or behaving in ways that we know are unbecoming.

 A Better Solution

Yet another solution is to drop or defer some of the usual tasks in order to attend to the additional ones brought on by the season. But won't this lead to feelings of guilt? Shouldn't one continue to do those usual tasks? No. The best solution is to acknowledge that there are only twenty-four hours in a day. If certain things don't get done, it's not your fault.
